Individual Yoga Lesson

Bespoke Yoga Package

Why Bespoke Yoga 1-1?

Traditionally Yoga was not taught in a class situation but was taught one to one. The teacher would prescribe a practice for the student considering their psychological, physiological and physical make up. This is because specific Yoga asana’s (postures) and Pranayama’s (breathing techniques) have physical, psychological and physiological effects so the practice prescribed would be appropriate for the individual’s needs.

In a class situation it’s impossible to cater for individuals, so we as Yoga teacher’s plan a class with a theme in mind and make it as adaptable as possible, offering modifications for specific physical constraints or medical issues but we are not really knowing what’s going on internally with each student.

To give an example, student R, who is naturally energetic, driven, determined, focused and likes a challenge may be drawn towards an Ashtanga class. (Ashtanga is a strenuous, dynamic, physically challenging style of Yoga that creates a lot of heat and is generally energising). Student R may look to be engaged and capable and enjoying the class but could result in being over-stimulated from the Ashtanga class and would benefit more from a Yin class. (Yin yoga is generally a more quietening practice, using static postures to release the connective tissue of the body). In contrast Student T who finds it hard to self- motivate, suffers from low moods and is naturally introverted may be drawn to a Yin practice. During the class Student T may appear to be fully engaged and enjoying the practice but may feel even more withdrawn afterwards, whereas a challenging, dynamic practice may bring buoyancy and enthusiasm to student T.

Traditionally, yoga was taught one to one. The teacher would prescribe the practice depending on the student’s individual psychological, physiological and physical composition.

According to yoga philosophy there are 3 qualities, known as Gunas, that exist in every living thing, including the mind: Rajas, Tamas and Sattva. Relating to the mind, Rajas is energetic, busy, passionate, excited and prone to anxiety. Tamas is dull, sluggish, foggy and heavy and prone to depression. Sattva is clear, calm, peaceful, harmonious and content. The purpose of yoga is to bring us to balance, to Sattva/clarity.

Bespoke Yoga Package

The initial 90-minute session is composed of part enquiry/ exploration and part physical practice for the purpose of having a personalised home yoga practice constructed, based on the psychological, physiological and physical needs of the individual. Through enquiry and exploration into lifestyle, habits and thought patterns we will seek to find which guna is dominating your personality currently, and this will contribute to how the personalised practice is structured.

Following the 1st session, Helen will construct a 30-minute home practice which will be shared, demonstrated and practiced in the second 1 hour session.

A longer home practice can be constructed on request. Then the duration of the second session and the price will be adjusted accordingly.

Please note: The bespoke package is most beneficial for those who already have a little experience of yoga in a class situation with Helen or after a few private lessons.

Individual Yoga Lesson

During a yoga class it’s impossible for the teacher to cater fully to the respective needs of each student. The 1-1 yoga lesson provides an opportunity to be guided more precisely with demonstration, specific instruction and appropriate adjustments for your unique self.

It’s an opportunity to try out postures or breathing techniques that you may be struggling with or just unsure about.

Following the 1-1 lesson, the student should feel more confident during a class situation, with the knowledge that they are performing each asana in the correct, safe, and most beneficial manner.

Private Group Lessons

Private group tuition can be arranged on request.
